Can India overtake China?

This was the question a wealthy Indian entrepreneur posed to me last week. The popular view is that China will, one day soon, become the world's leading economy. He had no problem with that assertion but he argued that China, in effect, started it's economic drive a good 10 years ahead of India but India was catching up fast. Also, in terms of knowledge based industries, he argued, India was ahead and cited cutting edge software giants Infosys and Wipro and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies such as Ranbaxy and Dr Reddy's Labs. He also argued that India had a stronger private enterprise infrastructure and it's capital markets operated with greater efficiency and more transparency than China. Put simply, he said, India was building from the ground up whilst China was pursuing a top down approach. Additionally, the bureaucrats in China were still in charge of the purse strings, whereas the democratic Indian approach allowed innovative thinking entrepreneurs to thrive. So, I asked, is all this going to be good for business aviation? - You bet, he replied!

The Indian Business Aviation Expo (IBAE) takes place 24/25 February, 2010 in New Delhi:
