Emirates chief backs London estuary airport

29 September 2008

The head of Emirates airline, Tim Clark, has suggested that London should seriously address the need for a new airport, to be built in the Thames estuary on reclaimed land.

"There is no room for growth. European and Middle East hubs will eventually eclipse Heathrow........a new airport would tick all the boxes in terms of growth and the environment, and would be funded by the sale of Heathrow for property development", said Clark.

Boris Johnson, the new London mayor, suggested the option soon after taking office and was met by a chorus of derision from entrenched interests and blinkered administrators.

Heathrow was recently voted the world's least favourite airport in a survey of international business travellers.
