An office in the sky?
24 June 2008
Travelers flying American Airlines on some domestic routes in the US this July will be able to access their emails and use the internet just like at home or in the office. Wireless internet access in the cabins of commercial airliners is a reality. On the internet-equipped aircraft, passengers with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop or other devices with Wi-Fi will be able to read and send emails, surf the internet, use instant-messengers, download files and even stream video and audio.
The new system is called Gogo which is for data transmission only and does not allow services such as phone calls over the internet. The new service will be used on 15 Boeing 767s of American Airlines flying between New York - Los Angeles and San Francisco - Miami. Later this year, Gogo will also be available on Virgin America’s aircraft.
The service will cost a flat fee of $12.95 for flights of three hours or longer and $9.95 for shorter flights. Most importantly, Gogo is safe and won't interfere with the aircraft's operation.
