New Bangalore airport opens but how to get there?

24 May 2008

India's state-of-the-art new Bangalore International Airport is open for business.   The 630m project is finally operational despite the petition of local people to keep the old airport open.
The new facility is located 36 km north of the city that has become India’s IT hub.  However, getting there is not easy.  From Electronic City in south Bangalore, it can take four hours to drive to the new airport.  No infrastructure project such as new roads and a rail link to and from the city centre has been built as the government had originally promised.
The airport was built in 36 months under a public-private partnership and it can handle more than 12 million passengers a year until 2012.  According to the Airports Authority of India, 9.6b dollars must be spent over the next five years to improve the country's airport infrastructure.  100 million passengers are expected to fly to Indian airports this year.
