The world's largest airline to be created in the US

15 April 2008

Delta Air Lines announced a $3.1 billion deal to acquire Northwest Airlines creating the world's largest airline and reshaping the US airline industry.  The new carrier will operate under the Delta name and be based in Atlanta.

If the deal is completed, the new airline will serve more than 390 destinations in 67 counties, will have $35 billion in annual revenue and more than 800 aircraft and 75,000 employees.

This consolidation comes at a tough time for the aviation industry.  ATA filed for bankruptcy and will cease operations.  Aloha Airlines has already ceased all operations and Frontier Airlines filed for bankruptcy last week but it will continue operating.
