First hydrogen battery powered aircraft takes to the skies
4 April 2008
Boeing has announced the successful maiden flight of a hydrogen battery powered aircraft.
The aircraft, which can carry two people, has a wingspan of 16 metres and flew for 20 minutes at 100km/h (60mph). The flight test took place in Ocana, Spain and the director of research, Francisco Escarti, said afterwards that hydrogen batteries offered the prospect of powereing all small aircraft in the future. As the anti-aviation lobby becomes ever more powerful in Europe and elsewhere the arrival of a cleaner, renewable energy source for aviation must be good news. Another advantage is the aircraft makes virtually no noise.
