The next-generation air taxi industry is booming. The arrival of the very light jet (VLJ) and next-generation aircraft combined with the development of sophisticated software solutions has begun to have a dramatic impact on the business aviation community.

To consolidate and expand on the interests of the sector, the Air Taxi Association (ATXA) was founded in the Spring of 2007 and will be the premiere sponsor of the International Air Taxi Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, January 2008.

The introduction of the VLJ has dramatically reduced the cost of jet acquisition and jet travel while simultaneously increasing the number of usable airfields for jets around the world. For the first time, the business traveler has a real choice.
However, the industry is still young with many questions yet to be answered. First, the air taxi companies are all relatively new and are jockeying for position. As a result, there are many air taxi models to choose from including on demand per seat, on demand by aircraft, regular flights from popular smaller airfields, irregular flights from less popular airfields, and so on. Then, there are the regulatory issues to consider. For example, in the U.S. VLJs can fly with one pilot while Europe requires two. Also, there is strong push back from the scheduled carriers that view next-generation air taxis as a threat.

The first International Air Taxi Convention (IATC) will address the following issues:

  • Will the best air taxi model vary by geographic region?
  • How will the regulatory authorities react?
  • Which of the air taxi models will be most effective?
  • Which VLJ or other aircraft is best for which market?
  • Will air taxis provide serious competition for conventional airlines?
  • Will the VLJ function better than other aircraft for short distances?
  • Will air taxis work in conjuction with them to improve business air travel?
  • Will the VLJ be more environmentally friendly than traditional bizjets?
  • Is the VLJ the prefect bizjet for Europe?
  • How to calculate residual values for VLJs?
  • Will the VLJ function better than other aircraft for short distances?
  • What will the air taxi market look like in five years?...ten years?

MIU Events, in co-operation with the Air Taxi Association, builds on its worldwide experience and contacts in the aviation industry to bring together the major players and innovators in the business aviation and air taxi sectors to debate, analyze, structure, and thoughtfully consider the best way forward for the international air taxi community.
