ARJ-21 REGIONAL JET TAKES OFF
The regional jet ARJ-21 of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China made its maiden flight in Shanghai. It is China’s first regional jet with 90 seats and a range of 2,225 km with a full load and 3,700 km maximum range. It is scheduled for certification in 2010.
AIRCRAFT FINANCING FOR ETIHAD
Etihad Airways has secured finance for two new A340-600s. The airline has raised $102 million for one of the aircraft based on an agreement with a consortium of banks. It has also secured $110 million under an Islamic financing contract.
FIRST A380 FOR AIR FRANCE
Air France has received its first A380. The aircraft will remain in the airline’s new hangar for compatibility tests and maintenance checks.
MERGER RUMOURS FOR EMIRATES-ETIHAD
Dubai based Emirates Airlines has denied the possibility of a merger with Abu Dhabi based Etihad Airways. A similar statement was issued by Etihad.
DELTA TO SCALE BACK BOEING ORDER
Delta Air Lines plans to scale back an order of Northwest for the 787 while expanding a Delta order for the 777-200LR.
ATR – MALAYSIA AGREEMENT
ATR and Malaysia Airlines have signed a Global Maintenance Agreement for the airline’s ATR 72-500 fleet. The aircraft will be flown by Malaysia’s subsidiaries MAS Wings and Firefly.
BA-QANTAS POTENTIAL MERGER
British Airways announced that it is exploring a possible merger with Qantas while the talks with Iberia are continuing.
PROFITS FOR CAIRO AIRPORT
Cairo International Airport in Egypt announced that its profits have exceeded LE500 million in 2007-08. The airport has carried our investments worth LE1.6 billion in 2008.
INCREASED PASSENGER TRAFFIC FOR ABU DHABI
Passenger growth at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the UAE has increased by 32.8% through the month of October 2008. With such a level of growth, it seems that 9 million passengers will have been served by the airport.
NEW TERMINAL FOR SHARJAH AIRPORT
Sharjah International Airport announced its plans to construct a new terminal. The new infrastructure project will cost AED1.3 billion.
ECLIPSE FILES FOR CHAPTER 11
Eclipse Aviation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced the sale of its assets to an affiliate company of ETIRC Aviation. The troubled manufacturer of the Eclipse 500 has $100-$500 million in assets but it its debts are about $1 billion.
MUSTANG CERTIFICATION IN CANADA AND JAPAN
Transport Canada and the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau have granted certification to the Cessna Citation Mustang.
