STERLING AIRLINES FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY
Icelandic owned Sterling Airlines, a Danish low cost carrier, has ceased operations and today it filed for bankruptcy. The airline was based in Copenhagen but it was owned by Iceland's Northern Travel Holdings.
Sterling Airlines merged with Maersk Air in 2005 but the total loss for both carriers exceeded DKK800 million and their co-operation lasted until 2006. Significant fuel costs increases affected the expansion plans of Sterling accumulating losses for the company. It had four B737-500s and 18 B737NGs.
S7 AIRLINES INTERESTED IN AUSTRIAN
Russia’s S7 Airlines has sent a letter of interest to OAIG for purchasing Austrian Airlines.
LUFTHANSA TAKES OVER BMI
The German carrier Lufthansa has decided to buy the 50% of the company owned by Sir Michael Bishop, Chairman of BMI. Lufthansa is already the second largest shareholder of BMI with a 30% stake minus one share. As a result of this deal, the German carrier will gain control of more flights from Heathrow airport than any other airline expect British Airways. BMI currently controls 11% of landing and take off slots at Heathrow.
BMI operates 54 aircraft and last year it flew 10.6 million passengers. Lufthansa operates 276 aircraft and in 2007 it flew 83.1 passengers.
QATAR AIR INTERESTED IN OLYMPIC AIRLINES
The Greek government has confirmed that Qatar Airways is interested in buying Greece's national airline Olympic Airlines. Qatar Airways is interested in acquiring the entire OA setup as part of its massive investments abroad.
A330 FOR AIRASIA X
Air Asia X, Malaysia’s long-haul budget airline, has received its first A330-300. The airline which is part of AirAsia Group, has ordered 25 aircraft in total.
BOEING FORECAST FOR CHINA
According to Boeing’s 2008 Current Market Outlook for China, there is a market for 3,710 new aircraft worth around $390 billion over the next 20 years. The forecast includes 2,600 single-aisle aircraft and around 100 larger aircraft (B747 or larger).
DELTA AIR LINES – NORTHERN AIRLINES MERGER COMPLETE
Detla Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have completed their merger. The new airline is called Delta and is based in Atlanta. It will serve 375 cities worldwide.
WEST ATLANTIC TO BE FORMED
Atlantic Airlines and West Air Sweden are merging in order to create West Atlantic, an all cargo regional airline based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new carrier will operate 41 BAE ATP Freighters, one ATR 72 Freighter, six Lockheed Electras, and two CRJ200PFs.
THE END OF AN ERA FOR TEMPELHOF AIRPORT
Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport has closed and now Berlin Airports is concentrating on the construction of the new Capital Airport Berlin Brandenburg International BBI that will open on October 30, 2011.
FORECAST FOR THE END OF ECLIPSE 500
Forecast International anticipates that production of the Eclipse 500 will end in the first quarter of 2009 and Eclipse Aviation will not be able to attract more investment.
CESSNA APPROVED BY FAA
Cessna Aircraft was approved by FAA as an ODA (Organisation Delegation Authority) and this means that the manufacturer meets the Federal Aviation Regulations for the aircraft it builds. The new authority covers all the Cessna aircraft.
REDUCED SUPPORT FOR ADAM AIRCRAFT
Industrial Investors, the Russian company that bought the assets of Adam Aircraft, has decided to reduce its financial support from $6 million to $1 million per month.
